 Applying for Medicare on ssa.gov is super easy! Here are the steps you will need to take:

1. Go to www.ssa.gov

2. Click on Sign up for Medicare

3. Scroll down a tad to the blue button that says start application

4. A new web page will pop up and you will click the box on the yellow highlighted field, then hit next

5. Click start a new application and answer that you are applying for yourself and if you have a My Social Security account

It will then ask you to sign into your myssa.gov account or create one if you don’t have one. When creating your Social Security account, it will send you to login.gov to sign up for the 2-layer password protection. It will then bring you back to ssa.gov.

6. Complete your application.

Some tips:

Click "Yes" when it asks, "do you want to sign up for Medicare Part B". It doesn't ask you about Part A, which comes along automatically. 

Be sure to go all the way to the end. There is a spot in the middle to save your application number, which looks like the end. Keep going until you reach the confirmation page.

In 10 days or so, go back to your Social Security account to see the status of your application. If it says step 3 of 3 complete, you will then be able to download your benefits letter. At the bottom of the screen will be a link that says, "Get a benefit verification letter", click that and it will download a pdf letter that will show your Medicare ID and Parts A and B start date.
